Part I


Qts 1  Explain Harappa civilization excavation 

1.About 150 years ago, while laying the railway lines at Harappa in Punjab in present day Pakistan, Engineers found a mound that was a rich source of ready made, high quality brick

2.Engineers  took off thousands of bricks from the walls of the old buildings of the city to build railway lines. Many buildings were completely destroyed

3.Around 1920, archaeologists found the site, and realised that this was one of the oldest cities in the subcontinent

4. Cities developed about 4700 years ago. This was the first city to be discovered from the Indus Valley Civilization, so the it is also called the Harappan Civilization.


Qts 2 Explain Structure of the cities

1.Many of these cities were divided into two or more parts.

2.One part to west – smaller but higher = Citadel

3.Other part to the east – larger but lower = Lower Town

4.Walls of baked brick were built around each part.

5.Towns were planned as per a grid system.


Qts 3 Describe Houses and Streets

1. Buildings were constructed with strong well baked bricks laid in inter-locking patterns.

2. Either one or two storeys buildings with rooms built around a courtyard.

3.Separate bathing area and Wells to supply water.

4.Covered drains with inspection holes.

5.Smaller drains were connected to bigger ones.


Qts 4 Explain life of Harappa civilization


1. Some people, probably the rulers were engaged in planning the towns.

2.Some people travelled distant places to get variety of materials.

3.Some people made jewelry and ornaments of gold and silver.

4.Scribes were the people did the reading and writing works.

5. Craft persons made variety of things from metals, clay, terracotta, etc.


Qts 5. Explain crafts in Harappa 


1. Copper and bronze were used to make tools, weapons, ornaments, and vessels.

2. Gold and silver were used to make ornaments and vessels.

3.Beads, weights, and blades were made of a special type of stone.

4.Pots with beautiful black designs were also made.

6..Spindle whorls were made of terracotta (Baked Clay) and faience (Chinese Clay)

7. Seals were made of stones, terracotta, etc.

8.Sealings were made of clay.


Qts 6. Describe source of raw materials in Harappa 


1.Cotton was the raw material for making clothes and it was produced by the farmers.

2.Copper was brought from present-day Rajasthan and Oman.

3.Tin was brought from Afghanistan and Iran.

4.Gold might have come from Karnataka.

4.Precious Stones were brought from Gujarat, Iran, and Afghanistan.
