EVD: Ebola Virus Disease
a. Affects humans and other primates.
b. This disease is caused by an Ebola Virus(filovirus)
Cause
a. Contact of the virus with blood and body fluids of an infected frugivorous bat.
b. once human infection occurs, the disease may be able to spread among people as well.
c. Male survivors may be able to transmit the disease via semen for nearly two months.
Effect of EVD
High risk of death, Killing between 50% and 90% of those infected with the virus.
Non- communicable or Non- Infectious or Degenerative Diseases
They occur due to the malfunctioning of some organ or organ system in the body, They are as follows
(i) Disorders of the Heart and Circulatory system
(a) Arteriosclerosis: Hardening of arteries.
(b) Varicose venues : Veins that have lost their classically and as a result appears in the legs as swollen, tortuous blue veins.
(c) Hypertension L: High blood pressure
(d) Hypotension : Low blood pressure
(e) Angina pectorals: Lack of oxygen in the blood may cause inadequate supply of oxygen to the heart muscle.
(ii) Disorders of the skeleton and Muscles
(a) Arteritis : (1) Degenerative arthritis (2) Rheumatism
(b) Gout: High levels of uric acid in the blood.
(iii) Disorder of the Islet cells
Diabetes Mellitus: Hypo secretion of insulin causes high level of glucose in the blood, the Kidney fails to reabsorb it completely its excess goes out in the Urine. This condition is also referred to as glycosuria.
(iv) Neurological Disorder:
(a) Parkinson's Disease : Degenerative disorder of the central Nervous system symptom: depression, thinking and behavioral problem..
(b) Epilepsy: Long-term neurological disorder.
(c) Migraine : chronic neurological disorder, symptoms: nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light sound and smell.
(d) Alzheimer's Disease: Death of brain cells causes memory loss and cognitive. declined.
